Have just discovered and started to read the very interesting material on your website. I was tickled to read the conjecture around the ownership of the first car in Newton. This was kind of a family joke for us because my grandmother, Mrs. J.R. Rowzee (Gertrude Norris) always joked that he had owned the first car in Newton, but that he bought it secondhand. My recollection is that she said he bought it from the mayor but I'm not certain on that point.

See previous comments.

1886 would not make sense either because the paragraph begins in the year 1889:
In 1889, W. H. Andrews, a young lawyer, bought the Free Press and was its editor for a short time. There was very little circulation to the paper during the time Mr. Andrews had charge of it, and probably no money made; more likely some was lost. Mr. Andrews removed to Texas as a practicing attorney, and is now in California and supposed to be doing well. After the removal of Andrews, S. B. Ross, a lawyer and printer, took editorial charge of the paper at Newton, then called the Dispatch, in 1866, and continued to edit until some time during the year 1887, when it was sold to J. J. Armistead, and the name was continued. Mr. Ross probably made some money in publishing the Dispatch, and was also engaged in the practice of the profession. He is still one of the prominent men in the town of Newton, engaged in the practice of law, also a correspondent of literary journals, and agent, in connection with his partner, J. R. Byrd, for Shattuck & Hoffman, a large moneyed syndicate, who loan money on real estate in this and adjoining counties. They have loaned about $40,000, about one-half in Newton County. These debts are usually met promptly, very little property having been sold.

Was the Dispatch a different paper other than the paper that followed the Free Press that was purchased by W. H. Andrews?

I believe there may be a mistake in the dating in paragraph 10 underneath the picture of R. H. Henry on page http://www.nchgs.org/html/about_newton_newspapers.html.
It says: In 1889, W.

I believe in sentence four where it says 1866, it should say 1886. Unless it is claiming to pre-date The Newton Ledger.

I found this article to be fascinating! Thank you for sharing.

I will be in Neshoba County next week to visit my sister and would like to do some genealogical research while there. I'm looking for info on my gggrandmother Emily Capel(s)/Caple(s). Her father Samuel Caples is listed in the 1845 Enumeration of White Inhabitants of Scott Co.
I know that Samuel purchased 40 acres "..of land subject to sale at Augusta, MS..".
I believe that Samuel m Elizabeth ..... in Newton Co abt 1843 and m 2nd gggrandmother Emily Caples was born there abt 1845.
I am particularly interested in marriage records that might tell me Elizabeth's maiden name as well as birth/death records for other children of the marriage and their respective deaths and burial sites.
I don't have a specific date to vist you, I'll be in MS for 2-3 weeks, but I'll see you soon. If you could point me in the right direction or offer advice on resources other than your collection and the courthouse, I'd be most grateful for any resources you might recommend.
Thanks very much,
