The Newton  County Historical and Genealogical Society was organized in March  2002 (Remembering the Beginning) for the two-fold purpose of:

  1. The procurement  and preservation of such historical items and genealogical  information considered important to an understanding of Newton  County, Mississippi and its people.
  2. Educating the  public of the history of Newton County, Mississippi, and its people  through tours, publications, workshops, and the media.

This website contains genealogical research and information related to Newton County, Mississippi. If you have information that would benefit other researchers and would like to add it to the NCHGS website, please contact Jo Veenstra, President.

The Newton Record 1929-1938 Volume 1

The Newton Record was published in Newton, Mississippi from December 5, 1901 until its closing with the last issue on January 14, 2009. It is an incredible genealogy resource for Newton County researchers. The newspaper contains tens of thousands of items relating to families, individuals and daily life. This book contains abstracts of many types of news items, including obituaries, engagements, marriages, births and general news items deemed interesting to readers.

Whether you are a Newton County, Mississippi genealogy researcher, a Mississippi resident, interested in the history of a slice of Mississippi life in 1929-1938 or simply interested in reading of yester years, I hope you enjoy the content of this book.  Ron Searcy, author.

There are plans to enhance this website in 2013 to make it more useful for those researching information on their Newton County, Mississippi connections.  I’m looking for individuals in the county to send information regarding Newton County that will enhance the website. Information should be sent to NCInformation@nchgs.org. Pictures should be sent in JPG format with a resolution of at least 1024x768 dpi.

The type of information sought is:

Churches (photos, addresses, history, GPS location, etc.),
Cemeteries (photos, addresses, names, GPS location, etc.),
Schools (GPS location, photos of schools with name of school/year taken & names of individuals, if known)
Historical Photos (past places and/or events including schools, downtown pictures, stories, ...),
Family Bibles (pictures of pages showing genealogy information, story/history of bible, owner, ...)
Historical Markers in the county (Picture of Marker clear enough to read text, GPS location, ...)
Old Maps (images of old maps)
Rural Development Clubs (when started, membership, history, what was accomplished, ...)
Volunteer Fire Departments (when, where, history, how they operated, ...)
Military Records (Letters to loved ones, Medals and the stories behind them, Pictures taken by Newton County soldiers of the War, ...)
Court Records

Basically, any information that will give visitors an historical perspective of Newton County with as much genealogy related information as possible. GPS locations can be gotten using SmartPhones, Garmin GPS devices, etc.
